As the name indicates, dedicated (also known as small-format) photo printers can print nothing but photos. They are typically limited to a maximum paper size of 2 by 3 inches, 4 by 6 inches, or 5 by 7 inches (or panoramic variations on these sizes), but the category isn’t defined just by its limits. These printers are relatively small and portable. They’re also much less computer printers than they are standalone consumer electronics products, with an emphasis on ease of use. There are few of them still on the market these days.

The enable and disable commands control whether a printer prints or stops printing requests that are in the print queue. When you disable a printer, the printer stops printing requests in the queue. However, requests are still added to the queue. You must set the printer to reject print requests so that requests are not added to the queue. For information about rejecting print requests, see Accepting or Rejecting Print Requests.
Fujifilm INSTAX SHARE SP-2 is a great iPhone photo printer which can make use of the free SHARE app to send images to the device from the smartphone, for immediate printing. The print quality is usually quite strong, at 320 dpi, and a resolution of 800×600. The colors are also fairly bold and varied. I’m a consumer, and just got my first Square “receipt” through the email from a merchant, and want other merchants to know I will never use that merchant again. I didn’t give the merchant my email address for a receipt, didn’t ask for a receipt because it was a small purchase, the merchant didn’t ask me if I wanted a receipt, printed or otherwise, and I have no idea how Square got my email address. I will try to track that down and put a stop to it if I can, but getting an unauthorized email regarding my credit card is unacceptable to me.
Great article. I was considering telling a friend who owns a small, traveling business about this product but I think I will tell him to continue to do his homework about products like this. Thanks for your insight.
We first bought the Wifi model and couldn’t get the manufacturer or Square to figure out how to make the two communicate, even though it’s supposed to be supported. We were told to return that and switch to this blue tooth model. Now this one won’t communicate with Square either. It’s the only receipt printer that Square publishes it supports. We don’t have any odd setup, all brand new peripheral equipment, new iPad, Square stand/Register. Hours on support with both and no resolution to date.

The Ethernet printers compatible with Square Point of Sale are thermal printers. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal receipt paper. These types of printers aren’t ideal for kitchens or high-temperature working areas.

Star introduces an intelligent interface for the TSP650, TSP700, and TSP800 series of thermal printers, as well as the SP700 series of impact printers, that enables them to receive receipts and orders direct from cloud printing services.
Nice little portable printer. It isn’t as slow as some of the reviewers mentioned, and we use it with Square, so it will print a custom photo-based logo right onto the receipt. One reviewer said you had to pay extra to remove the Star logo – this was not my experience, however. We bought the neck strap, and a padded camera-type case to carry the printer, power supply, extra battery, Square card readers.
To create your own bar codes and labels, you’ll need to use a third-party application. At the moment, we don’t support bar code and label printers and can’t guarantee compatibility, but many customers have success using the DYMO Label Writer 450 and labels with Square.
5) Ultimate word-of-mouth promotion is the customer? Not really–their interaction with a Square is fleeting. Vendors are doing the talking here, and they’re doing a lot of it. Square (and its competitors) do have customer-facing products, but the card swipers audience is vendors, not customers.
Many companies selling hardware such as printers are becoming more and more conscious of the impact their products have on the environment, particularly in terms of power consumption, but there are other factors to consider. If you are thinking of using your regular inkjet or laser printer to print sales receipts for your customers instead of investing in a receipt printer, consider this…
Whether you need something that can spit out photos, generate documents, or print labels while you’re on the go, one of these portable printers should fit the bill. If you’re looking for a full-size printer, check out our overall top recommended models or our top-rated laser printers. In the market for a more specialized printer? 2) Incomplete receipt. That’s a problem with the vendor’s accounting practices, not with the Square, and it’s certainly not a tech problem. I have many, many paper cab receipts that have NOTHING printed on them at all or a scrawl that says 5 (or maybe S) let alone a nice, readable record of my purchase.
Really solid receipt printer. Less expensive than 90% of the machines in its class, but it holds its own without an issue. Installation was slightly more involved than other reviewers had let on (it helps to know which port you’re connecting this through), but overall it was still pretty simple to get working. Just make sure that you don’t have an old version of the Epson receipt print driver on your computer, as this can cause the installation to fail.

The prints are smudge-free straight out of the printer, water proof and tear resistant. As a matter of the fact, the fourth step of the printing process uses a weather proof coating that will also prevent damage due to exposure to the sun. Want to stick these print on a wall or for a school project book? Simply peel off the sticky back and they become stickers.

The Star thermal receipt printer uses futurePRNT software to dramatically reduce the amount of receipt paper you use. You can trim receipts vertically or horizontally without interfering with your original software setup. The partial cut auto cutter of this POS receipt printer achieves a 3mm top margin, thus saving 8mm of paper with each receipt. On-demand receipt printing feature gives you the option of not printing a receipt if the customer declines one. (Regional laws vary.)
If the merchant is using an iPad, there is the option to print a true receipt. But many, like cabs, use cellphones, and they don’t invest in a printer (the point being to save money, right?). If not, email is all you get. So then you have to wait till it posts to your Visa account (assuming you have access to that account), print out the record, etc. If it’s a corporate account, how willing do you think accounting is going to be to check dozens and maybe hundreds of these things (as they become more common) against the corporate account, especially since there are no account or reference numbers?
Check the running cost and total cost of ownership if you can. Unfortunately, this may be impossible for near-dedicated photo printers, since there’s currently no widely accepted standard for calculating cost per photo. For dedicated photo printers, however, the cost per photo is typically easy to calculate, because most manufacturers sell print packs with enough ink and paper for a given number of photos.
