shopping cart websiteBefore picking a shopping cart for your website you need to know what a shopping cart does. Let’s get started.

What is a shopping cart?
A shopping cart is a term used to describe something (software) that you add to your website so that your customer can make a purchase. It works like a real shopping cart.
A new webpage appears with the items in the customer’s shopping cart, the price, the taxes and the shipping options. Your customer can click complete and you’ve made a sale.

Your customers browses your website
The customer adds items they want to buy into their “shopping cart”
When they are ready to purchase, the customer clicks checkout
All the items the customer put in the shopping cart appear on a new webpage known as checkout
The checkout page also shows the prices, total price, taxes and shipping.
The customer checks out by entering their credit card information and clicks on submit.
There are different types of solutions but the functions are the same.

What are the different types of carts?

We will break this down into 2 different kinds: Server Side and Hosted.

Server Side Shopping Carts

Some carts are simply software that you add to your website. Generally, the shopping carts are software that you will implement on your web server.

Hosted Shopping Carts

Hosted shopping carts are super easy to implement. You simply add code to your checkout page.

There is a third type of shopping cart. This type is really a complete ecommerce solution. The solutions we recommend are Big Commerce and Shopify.
