There are three main ways to connect your printer into your Wi-Fi network: using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), using the printer’s onboard Wireless Setup Wizard, or by connecting your printer to your computer via USB and using the supplied software to configure the wireless connection.

Bluetooth uses a low power wireless networking protocol to connect devices within close range, generally no further than ten meters. While most contemporary laptops come equipped with Wi-Fi adapters, Bluetooth is a little less common. If your computer doesn’t come equipped with Bluetooth, for $20 you can add a small adapter to a USB port. Bluetooth networks have the advantage of being easy to maintain — you don’t need anything other than a Bluetooth-equipped printer and Bluetooth-equipped computers. No routers or other networking equipment is necessary.
Printing out 4×6 images on the provided sample photo paper resulted in very nice prints. The colour depth and finish were excellent. Each print took about 35 seconds so not the fastest, but for a home printer this will suffice for me.
Microsoft Windows: Not all features are available in all editions or versions of Windows. Systems may require upgraded and/or separately purchased hardware, drivers and/or software to take full advantage of Windows functionality. See http://www.microsoft.com
Bluetooth Smart, also called Bluetooth Low Energy, is used to connect an Android phone or tablet to your printer through the HP ePrint app. You can then use the HP ePrint app to print photos, documents, webpages, and emails, or print from cloud services such as Dropbox or Google Drive.
Wireless printing is hugely convenient, because it makes it easy to share your printer with your computing kit. All the main printer manufacturers now include models in their ranges that have Wi-Fi onboard. Typically you’ll find wireless built-in to models that cost from £40 and upwards, so you don’t necessarily have to spend big to get this functionality. Wireless printing is supported on HP’s Deskjet 3000 (pictured, below right), which is priced at just £45, for example.
Another negative is the size of colour cartridges. These things are petite. There are six in total which is why the colour reproduction is so vivid and it will also spread the load between 5 (the main black cartridge which is about double the size of the rest, is only used for B&W jobs) whereas a standard printer would use three colour cartridges. I like Canon and their printer products but these ink cartridges could be priced better. They have three size versions, normal, X large, and XX large all within the same physical cartridge. To me this means they just fill them to different levels and then charge according to the amount of ink in each version. Unfortunately, Canon doesn’t yet provide any stats on how many pages a cartridge is good for, not that I could find when searching.
Recently, we’ve also seen the advent of cloud printing services. These services allow you to send documents and photos to your printer from anywhere in the world. So you can send a photo of New York you’ve just taken on your mobile to your printer back home, for example. And if your printer is ‘cloud ready’, it doesn’t need to be connected to a PC for cloud printing to work. As long as it’s turned on and connected to your Wi-Fi network, it’ll start printing once it’s received the data via the Internet. Kodak’s Hero 7.1 (pictured right) is just one example of a cloud-ready printer.
If your printer doesn’t have any wireless capabilities, you can still convert it by connecting it to a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth print server. Both types cost around $50-$60. As with the printers, a Bluetooth server is easier to set up but has limited range.
Naturally, to set up wireless printing, you’ll need to have a wireless network in your home. However, most people with a broadband connection will already have a wireless router, as broadband suppliers usually include them as part of their start-up packs.
The easiest option is to use WPS if your router and printer both support it. With WPS you don’t have to know your network’s name (or SSID as it’s officially known) or password. Instead you simply select the WPS option on your printer via its control panel and then press the WPS button on your wireless router. The two devices will then automatically communicate with each other to establish the connection. Once the connection is set up, you just install the driver software from your printer’s installation CD-ROM on all the PCs in the network that will be used for printing.

Video playback: Testing conducted by HP consisting of full battery discharge while running a 720p HD video playback with headphone at default volume as the audio output device. Prior to testing, the system was fully charged and set to display brightness of 100 nits, wireless off and WLAN off. Battery life will vary depending on the product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage.
Some products utilize the keyboard shortcut ‘Ctrl + Alt + S’; the product information will appear after a short delay. If that doesn’t work, this information can also be found on your bar code stickers, typically located on the back of your product.

Printing speed isn’t the fastest but more than fast enough for average home use. The double-sided printing feature in this small of a package is nice and works well but again it’s slower when compared to larger machines.

The final option is to configure your printer by first connecting it to your computer via USB. Some people may find this option easier than the second method, as it can often be a bit fiddly to enter long Wi-Fi passwords using your printer’s basic controls.
I was able to fit 75 sheets of standard print/copy paper into the bottom tray or about a dozen in the back mounted pop up feeder that can be used. In both cases adjustments can be made to hold different sizes of regular paper stock, envelopes, or photo paper. Canon doesn’t provide any details here, how many sheets either one will hold.
Use the “Add Printers” wizard. You can also add the printer by clicking “Start” and “Printers and Faxes” and then “Add a Printer.” When the wizard pops up, select “Bluetooth printer” and Windows will search for your printer automatically.
Bluetooth printing is supported on Canon’s current Selphy range of portable printers (pictured right), for example, and some of its Pixma models, such as the MX320, but only via an optional plug-in card. Bluetooth support is also built-in to a limited number of HP models.
Bluetooth is usually used for transferring files between mobile devices as well as streaming audio from mobile phones to wireless headsets and headphones. For a while Bluetooth was also a popular technology for wireless printing, especially for printing photos from mobile phones.
♦ ♦ ♦: I do have one problem that I am unable to get around, the printer will not see any images on an SD card inserted into the reader slot. I’ve tried formatting three different cards each as exFAT, FAT, FAT32, and even NTFS. I’ve put jpeg and tiff (formats shown as supported by the documentation) images on the various cards. then navigate through the screens to where it simply states that “Data of supported types are not saved”. I’ve had it check to see if there’s a firmware update but nothing at this time. This is mystifying as all other printers I use including the other current Canon have no issues with the three cards or images that are loaded on them. I don’t use this onboard feature very often as I prefer to use image manipulation software like Photoshop rather than try to use the limited features that are typically found on printers but there are times when I just need to print a snap shot and be done with it. This is a real let down on an otherwise great home printer.

The advantage of this is that you can print from any mobile device that has email support, without having to install any extra driver software or apps. There are email printing services available from companies such as Kodak, HP and Xerox.
Some printers also feature Bluetooth technology (including the HP Officejet 100 Mobile, pictured right). Bluetooth support lets you wirelessly print off snaps that you’ve taken on your mobile phone without first having to transfer them to your PC.

The growing popularity of smart phones and tablets has meant that more and more of us want to be able to print directly from our mobile devices, rather than having to sync photos and files with a PC when we want to produce hard copies. Thankfully, printer manufacturers have cottoned on to this and now all the major brands have produced their own free smart phone and tablet printing apps.
Wireless technology has freed us from the tyranny of cables, allowing us to use our laptops, netbooks, smart phones and tablets pretty much anywhere we want, while remaining connected to the Internet. Over the last few years Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology has started appearing in printers too.
